The American Music Camp, Maine

The American Music Camp (“AMC”) was created to provide an environment for string students of all ages and levels to become involved in the vast landscape of American Music. This five-day intensive enrichment Camp helps to form well-rounded, 21st century musicians by providing inspiration, exposure to many different musical styles, nationally acclaimed faculty, and a time and place for new friendships and creative collaboration. The American Music Camp has as its highest priority the nurturing and development of the personal skills of each student. The Camp is staffed by professional musicians who are not only performing artists in various genres of music but are first and foremost, teachers experienced at working with students of all ages.

The purpose of the American Music Camp is two-fold:

  1. To support and further the playing skills of each individual student by example, mentoring and instruction.
  2. To provide skills and environments for students to make music with their peers.

The next American Music Camp, Maine will be located at the stunning ocean-side campus of the Southern Maine Community College in Portland, Maine from July 9th-13th, 2018.

The Camp will host programs for strings of all levels and ages, guitar/mandolin, piano accompaniment, teaching professionals, performances and events.

Each student is provided with a daily schedule designed specifically for his/her playing level. All students are assigned to an instrument-specific group class designed for honing individual skills on that instrument. Electives in jamming, improvising, various genres & styles, singing, dancing, drumming & orchestra provide opportunities for musical interaction with other players and other instruments. An “unstructured” period in which students can pursue musical relationships, form bands and create arrangements for performing at recitals is a hallmark of the Camp. Extra Classes for non-participating friends and family are available as well.

The Camp has reserved a discounted rate for rooms in the Southern Maine Community College dormitories on campus. This is offered for families traveling from afar and reservations need to be made directly through the college. For more details, visit the “Accommodations” page on our site.
